To say the St. Barnabas staff, volunteers & board are thrilled w/this recognition is an understatement! We are well aware that its success is not possible without the work of so many people from the community both near & far. Sincere thanks goes out to all of you for your continued support through prayers, volunteering & contributions.
Be sure to pass this onto anyone you think would be interested.
Gratefully, Mary Murphy
Highmark "Walk for a Healthy Community" Results
July 19, 2010
St. Barnabas' 1st Annual Highmark "Walk For a Healthy Community"Seventeen years ago in Uptown HBG neighbors noticed children on the streets during summer months, too young to be on their own yet too old to be in a day-care type setting. Bishop McNutt of the Episcopal Diocese of Central PA approached Bishop Edmiston of the Lower Susquehanna Lutheran Synod about use of a building. One thing led to another and that's when St. Barnabas was founded as a joint ministry between the Diocese & Synod. Located in St. Paul's on Seneca Street, St. Barnabas gives children a safe, Christian environment with opportunities for spiritual development, intellectual growth, mentoring & to just have fun. While Bishops have changed over the years, what hasn't is the commitment to this ministry. Our 1st annual Highmark walk was a shining example of that with Bishops McNutt & Edmiston joined by Bishops Baxter & Hoover and 52 others. We raised over $9,000 with Bishop McNutt as the top fundraiser, so thanks to all of you for giving so generously. There are also results of the walk, however, that cannot be quantified... With a reorganized working board, we have 50 children enrolled in the summer camp (double that of last year). It's being led by a new director & 5 counselors - all talented, caring, young adults who will be wonderful role models. The price of tuition's been reduced, and the camp's gone back to basics of teaching skills like gardening, fishing, zumbatonics, karate, a special Boyz II Men program, swimming & sign language. Field trips will be educationally & fun focused, not to mention a lot less expensive. Junior counselors will be trained as future counselors. The board's participated in Adult Forums & Outreach meetings at other churches with offers to help that we're re-building our base of volunteers. The 8 churches preparing & serving meals are inviting other churches to join them. An initial meeting was held with HBG School District's Asst. Superintendent so we can all work together and share experiences, ultimately making our programs even better. As if that weren't enough, we're in the planning stages for the after-school program. We've often thought about how churches & individuals have kept St. Barnabas going over the years...and now thanks be to God growing. It came from our own answer on why we're so involved: we do not let the walls of our church bind us from getting out in the community; we do not let a river stop us from reaching those in need; and we especially believe EVERY child deserves a chance for a bright future.

Help in Identifying & Leading a Raffle Drawing...
June 16, 2010
NEWS RELEASE: Help in Identifying & Leading A St. Barnabas Raffle Drawing The St. Barnabas Center for Ministry is a joint ministry of the Lutheran Synod, the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania & St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Uptown Harrisburg. As background the children's ministry has an after-school program and summer day camp offering a high quality faith-based experience for at-risk children in Harrisburg. This year's summer camp will be led by Jayson Davenport (a former counselor of two years) and his fabulous five counselors. All these young adults are outstanding role models dedicated to the well-being of the children. This year's summer camp has 56 children, more than double from last year. It will feature cultural enrichment, physical fitness and educational experiences to participants in full day sessions during the summer. Over the past several months, the St. Barnabas Center Board has reorganized into a working board, restructured the summer camp, participated in their 1st annual Highmark "Walk for a Healthy Community", and obtained grants. In parallel with that, we got a much-needed boost from a very special fundraiser. Sponsored by a group of women at St. Andrew in the Valley, they created a beautiful hand-made quilt and sold raffle tickets to local churches. The winner of the Dec. 14th drawing was Sally Lied from Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill. Congratulations, Sally, and thanks to those who purchased tickets. In total $2,000 was raised to help fund St. Barnabas! If you have any ideas for future fundraisers, please contact Linda Cummings at 717-576-4186 or dalkcummings@comcast.net. Thanks to everyone for your on-going support of this wonderful ministry.
